About SHPE DC PROFESSIONAL CHAPTER

The DC chapter of SHPE was established in 1988 to bring together like minded professionals in SHPE's 6 pillars - Career development, leadership development, professional development, chapter "familia" development, STEM pipeline development (professional-student chapter interaction), and community service. SHPE is open to all professionals (not only engineers and not only Latinxs) who share SHPE's mission of changing lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. It's free to Join SHPE DC! Joining SHPE National as a paid professional member opens up even more opportunities, including access to SHPE Conference - the nation's largest technical and career conference for Hispanics - and Regional Leadership Development Conferences across the country.

What is SHPE?

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE, pronounced "SHIP") is a national non-profit organization that is focused on the concept of networking toward improving oneself professionally. SHPE was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.

The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong and independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. As a national organization, SHPE has 250 chapters and close to 10,000 members across the U.S.

Our Mission

SHPE changes live by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.

Our Vision

SHPE's vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

SHPE DC History

The SHPE-DC professional chapter was formed in 1987 and incorporated in the state of Maryland by Orlando Gutierrez in 1988 and by a group of Hispanic engineers and scientists who recognized the need to represent the professional Hispanic community working in several federal agencies and industries in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

The chapter has held some memorable events over the last 31 years. In 1995, the chapter held a well-attended congressional networking event on Capitol Hill where members were able to meet Hispanic congressmen. A few years later in 1998, the chapter planned and hosted a highly attended Eastern Technical Career Conference and two years later in 2000, hosted and planned the National Technical Career Conference held at the Marriott in Washington, DC. In the years that followed the chapter also hosted and planned a Region IV Summer Bash in 2003 and the second Region IV Professional Development Program, both attended by regional members from as far north as Boston. Then in 2009, the chapter hosted the second SHPE Conference once again at the Marriott in Washington, DC. Many of the chapter members participated on the planning committee for the conference.

The chapter has worked closely with several university chapters in the area attending their events, providing financial assistance, mentoring and support. The schools assisted have been University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, George Mason University and University of Virginia. In addition, the chapter has built relationships with the following high schools – Banneker, Roosevelt, TC Williams, Wakefield High School and Annadale High School. The chapter also has worked with community and other organizations such as Alcanzando Metas, Girls Scouts, Latin American Youth Council, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Office of State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), National Society of Hispanic Professionals (NSHP), and National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), assisting with events or providing presenters. Members of the chapter assisted the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education (CAHSEE) for several years, by grading the applicants for their summer program. The chapter has also built relationships with the local sister organizations of Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), having attended some of their meetings or holding joint meetings and even expanded the circle by reaching out to the DC Council of Engineers and Architects Society (DCCEAS). SHPE DC has been very active within the past years, while developing our members and promoting engineering, math and science to Latinos in the community.
